| General Info | Sojourn by Amit Chaudhuri follows an unnamed Indian writer who arrives in Berlin as a visiting professor in the autumn of 2005. Rather than focusing on a conventional plot, the narrative captures the protagonist's profound sense of displacement and psychological unravelling as he navigates the city. He wanders through Berlin’s historic streets, museums, and cafes, experiencing a strange mix of unfamiliarity and deep historical weight. Along the way, he forms fleeting connections, notably with Faqrul, an exiled Bangladeshi poet who eventually vanishes, and Birgit, a German woman with whom he shares an understated attraction. As his temporary teaching assignment progresses, the narrator increasingly loses his bearings, slipping into a fragmented, dreamlike state of amnesia and disorientation. The novel serves as a poetic exploration of memory, identity, and the transient nature of modern global travel. Ultimately, Chaudhuri delivers a haunting, noirish portrait of a man coming undone in a city defined by its own traumatic fractures. |
