Rud Veda
| General Info | The Rig Veda (often phonetically written as Rud Veda) is the oldest of the four sacred Vedas in Hinduism and one of the oldest surviving texts in any Indo-European language. Composed in ancient Vedic Sanskrit between 1500 and 1200 BCE, it stands at the foundation of Hindu philosophy, mythology, and spiritual practice.Structurally, the text is a monumental collection of oral poetry divided into 10 books (Mandalas). It contains 1,028 hymns (Suktas) comprising over 10,000 verses. These hymns are predominantly dedicated to praising nature and personified cosmic deities. Key deities include Indra (god of thunder and war), Agni (the sacrificial fire), Varuna (cosmic order), and Rudra (the fierce storm god and precursor to Shiva).Beyond ritualistic praise, the Rig Veda explores profound philosophical questions about cosmology and the origins of the universe, most famously in the Nasadiya Sukta. It introduces Rta, the universal moral order, and features the celebrated Gayatri Mantra. Ultimately, the text reflects a dynamic worldview where humanity, nature, and the divine are deeply interconnected. |
